scrittore tedesco
Edgar Hilsenrath was a prominent German-Jewish writer and Holocaust survivor, born in 1926. His literary career was marked by a series of novels that offered a candid and unflinching portrayal of the Holocaust, drawing heavily from his personal experiences in a Nazi concentration camp. Through his writings, Hilsenrath provided a unique perspective on one of the darkest periods in human history, leaving an indelible mark on the literary world.
Hilsenrath's life was marked by significant geographical shifts, shaped by the tumultuous events of the 20th century. After fleeing Nazi Germany in 1944, he spent time in Palestine and France before eventually settling in New York City in 1951. During his 24-year residence in the United States, he published his earliest novels and became a naturalized citizen. However, in 1975, he made the decision to return to Germany, where he would remain until his death in 2018. His notable works include Night, The Nazi and the Barber, and The Story of the Last Thought, which continue to be recognized for their raw and unvarnished depiction of the Holocaust.
