Bilu (movement)

Jewish movement

Bilu was a Jewish movement that emerged in the late 19th century, driven by the influx of Russian Jewish immigrants. The movement's primary objective was to establish agricultural settlements in the Land of Israel, with the goal of promoting Jewish migration to Ottoman Palestine. Its members, known as Bilu'im, were driven by a desire to create a new life in the historic Jewish homeland.

The Bilu'im adhered to a distinct ideology, rejecting the ideas of Emancipation and assimilation as viable paths for Jewish survival. Instead, they focused on building a self-sufficient community in Palestine. However, the movement ultimately faced significant challenges, including difficult farming conditions and a lack of financial resources to support the settlers. These obstacles ultimately led to the collapse of the Bilu movement, bringing an end to its ambitious plans for agricultural settlement in the Land of Israel.
