Habib Elghanian was a notable Iranian Jewish businessman of the 20th century, recognized for his philanthropic efforts and leadership within the Iranian Jewish community. During the 1970s, he held the position of president of the Tehran Jewish Society, serving as a symbolic head of the community. His business acumen and community involvement made him a prominent figure in Iranian society.
Elghanian's life took a dramatic turn following the Iranian Revolution, as he was arrested and put on trial by an Islamic revolutionary tribunal. He was charged with various offenses, including corruption, maintaining contacts with Israel, and promoting Zionism, as well as being accused of "friendship with the enemies of God". Found guilty, he was sentenced to death and subsequently executed by firing squad on May 9, 1979, in Tehran. This event marked him as the first Jewish individual and businessman to be executed by the Council of the Islamic Revolution, a significant and tragic milestone in the history of the Iranian Jewish community.
