Mendel Grossman

fotografo polacco

Mendel Grossman was a Polish photographer who played a significant role in documenting life in the Łódź Ghetto during the Holocaust. Born as Mordka Mendel Grossman, he worked in the Statistical Department of the Judenrat, where he was tasked with capturing official photographs. However, he also secretly took photos that revealed the harsh realities of daily life for Jewish people living in the ghetto.

Grossman's photographs provide a rare and valuable glimpse into the experiences of those living in the Łódź Ghetto. Before the ghetto was liquidated in 1944, he managed to hide thousands of negatives, some of which have survived and are now held by institutions such as the Ghetto Fighters' House and Yad Vashem. Tragically, Grossman's life was cut short when he died on April 30, 1945, during the death marches, but his photographs continue to serve as an important historical record of a devastating period in history.
