Jack Kessler
American hazzan and musician (1944–2024)
Jack Kessler was a renowned American hazzan and musician, whose career spanned multiple decades. Born in 1944, he dedicated a significant portion of his life to serving as a cantor for various synagogues, a role he held for 20 years. During this time, he developed a deep understanding of the musical and spiritual aspects of his position, laying the groundwork for his future endeavors.
As a musician and educator, Kessler went on to organize several notable musical ensembles, including Atzilut, a unique group comprising Jewish and Arab musicians. This ensemble toured extensively, performing at prestigious venues around the world, including the United Nations. Kessler also introduced innovative approaches to traditional Jewish chanting practices, such as chanting trop for haftarah and other biblical texts in both Hebrew and English. This practice aimed to enhance the worship experience, making the texts more engaging and accessible to synagogue congregations. He passed away in 2024, leaving behind a legacy of musical and spiritual contributions.
