Elkan Nathan Adler
autore inglese, avvocato, storico (1861–1946)
Elkan Nathan Adler was a renowned English author, lawyer, and historian, born in 1861. His father, Nathan Marcus Adler, held the esteemed position of Chief Rabbi of the British Empire. Adler's own pursuits took him down a path of extensive travel and scholarly exploration, particularly in the realm of Jewish history. Throughout his life, he amassed a vast and impressive library, with a focus on rare and historic Jewish documents.
Adler's contributions to the field of history are notable, especially his pioneering work with the Cairo Genizah, a repository of ancient manuscripts. He is credited as the first European to gain access to this treasure trove of historical texts. During his visits to Cairo in 1888 and 1895, Adler collected over 25,000 manuscript fragments from the Genizah, which he subsequently brought back to England. This significant acquisition has had a lasting impact on the study of Jewish history and manuscripts, cementing Adler's legacy as a dedicated collector and historian until his passing in 1946.
