Mirjam Pressler

Mirjam Pressler was a German novelist and translator who made significant contributions to the field of literature. Born Mirjam Gunkel, she went on to author over 30 books for children and teenagers, showcasing her talent as a writer. In addition to her original works, Pressler was also a prolific translator, rendering more than 300 texts into German from various languages, including Hebrew, English, Dutch, and Afrikaans.

Pressler's translations introduced German readers to a wide range of international authors and works. Notably, she translated a revised version of Anne Frank's iconic diary, The Diary of a Young Girl, in 1991. This translation not only made the diary accessible to a new generation of readers but also renewed its copyright. Through her writing and translation work, Pressler left a lasting impact on German literature and helped to promote cross-cultural understanding and exchange.
